Pleasant Valley Civic Organization
Although the City of Pleasant Valley and the Pleasant Valley Civic Organization have historically worked side by side to make our city the desirable location to live that it is today, they remain two separate entities -- the City administering government, and the Organization promoting good citizenship and community pride.
The Community Building itself stands as a tribute to long-range volunteer fundraising efforts by a farsighted group of individuals who, more than 40 years ago, formed the Civic Organization to better the community and to instill a sense of civic involvement among its residents. This spirit is carried on today by a handful of dedicated members who have elevated this premise to heights of which the original founders (most of whom are not with us today) could not have imagined, but would have been so proud!
Some of the past projects of the organization have included:
-
Preparing a plat plan and assigning numbers to all homes and lots in Pleasant alley.
-
Donating street signs (since replaced) to the city.
-
With the city; writing the zoning ordinance and drawing a zoning map.
-
Furnishing a facility for the City Council to meet before the previous City Hall was constructed.
-
Selling the land, at cost, to the city for the previous City Hall and Fire Station.
-
Publishing two Pleasant Valley Cookbooks.
Our major accomplishment, and of which we feel we can be justifiably proud, had been construction of the Pleasant Valley Civic Center at 6805 Sobbie Road, adjacent to the Fire Station. This is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the area and was designed and constructed almost entirely by members of the organization and community. Not one cent of city, state or federal funds was used in the contruction. Funds for the land and building were raised through dinners, rummage sales, a fireworks stand, bake sales and other activities. With the exception of a paid custodian, the facility is maintained by members of the organization.
On-going activities of the Civic Organization include;
-
An Annual Spaghetti Dinner
-
A free Pleasant Valley Flyer -Published monthly since February 1956
-
Annual Pleasant Valley Garage Sales
-
Annual Ice Cream Social
-

-

-

-

The Civic Organization embarked on a project which we consider to be its finest to date -- that of presenting a scholarship to a Pleasant Valley graduating senior. To assist in the education of a young person is not only an admirable cause, it is an investment in the community's future. The scholarship is made possible only through ongoing and diligent fundraising. And in order for it to become an annual, consistent award, we must persist in our efforts. The assessment of any fundraising project is in its volunteers And the rewards of volunteerism can be measured in the tangible and responsive -- material results and the knowledge of good deeds well done.
How does one reap all of the rewards? The answer is simple:
VOLUNTEER ! ! BECOME A MEMBER OF THE CIVIC ORGANIZATION ! (At $1.00 per year for dues, this is an economical avenue toward self-esteem.) I urge you to become involved in your community and to experience first-hand what teamwork and a sense of common purpose can do.
